    Henry Cooper vs Ali

Because cooper was lighter than Ali, and Alis thing was speed - Cooper actually gave Ali a lot of trouble in fact - it looks like he knocked Ali out.

If anyone is going to respond to this thread:

1: rewatch it right now - don’t go off memory

2: look at Alis legs when he gets up - they are jiggling like Jelly

3: coopers speed was catching Ali - it looks like a very real possibility he would have caught him again - especially if hurt

I would like some non biased speculation on how Ali would have faired if Dundee didn’t bail him out. Ali is a lot worse off than say, Tunney against Dempsey- where Tunney looks clear headed and timing his get up. Ali looks like got his lights turned out and woke up.

I know I will get a couple default opinions that will side with Ali no matter what - but smarter posters will know a hurt man when they see one. This was the most hurt Ali ever was in his career.

Tunney's "lights are turned out" too until you watch him pull his leg out from under himself and look up at the referee. That's when Tunney becomes clear headed.

I will offer you your own advice, rewatch that fight before replying.

If Tunney had to get up five seconds earlier his legs would have quivered just like Ali's.

P.S. It was the other second, not Dundee, who sticks the smelling salt under Ali's nose. Watch Ali's face.

The torn glove story, is a just a story.

        Here's a suggestion:
"I'm a tiny man so I have to prop up smaller fighters like Cooper and make ridiculous claims to feel better"

I see Tunney as being more clear headed than Ali was. this is my own observation and personal opinion. He may have been turned off for a second though, you are right about that.

let me rephrase: he wasn't jello legged

ill stoop to your level from now on. whenever you bring up size buddy, i'll just say "FATASS" in big fonts.

                understand FATASS?

let's keep the lazy fat out of my posts and allow better posters to take up space understand? from now on I will be as immature as possible regarding you.

I've done my best to speak rationally with you, but in your little mans brain in a fat ****s body you think you are chipping away at something. I will gladly be as immature as possible! it will be fun actually! ESCALATE

                  Well,I'll take the bait.
I listened to the fight on the radio, there was no live TV.
Ali had predicted a 5th rd stoppage win, playing around ,and underestimating Cooper's speed he found himself caught time and again with jabs . In the 5th and final round, Ali misses a left hook and Cooper throws a quick counter left hook, catching Ali against the ropes and Ali goes down.
The ropes contributed to the knockdown ,but they also assisted Ali,in that he slides down them instead of being in the middle of the ring where he may have gone down and hit his head when he hit the canvas.Up at 3 ,as the bell goes he is wobbly but walks to his corner and Dundee gets him on his stool as quick as he can.
Chickie Ferrara sticks smelling salts under Ali's nose, behind the cover of a towel, salts were illegal in the UK by then.
The BS about the split seam on the glove has been so overplayed over the years the extra time came to 5 seconds.Five seconds extra for Ali to recover more, five seconds more for Cooper's cut man,Danny Holland to work on his cuts.

I don't think it was a factor in the eventual result.Especially as we later found how good Ali's powers of recovery were. Ali at that stage of his career was a novice at infighting,Cooper said in close ,he would just hold and wait for the Ref to break them,Henry said he was markedly improved in their second fight.
Bottom Line Ali got complacent and was clowning, the 5 th round no clowning, Cooper cut to pieces.
The worst Ali was hurt was this fight and in the 11 th against Frazier FOTC .imo Shavers and a moment in the Bonavena fight would be next.I obviously discount Ali's last to bouts.

                    some good insight.

so the glove tear is a myth? I always thought Dundee admitted to this. is this not true?

totally not underestimating Ali's recuperative abilities, he showed this time and time again. I will say this did look the most hurt I ever saw him, very rare to see Ali with a glazed over look on his face.
