What makes you think Fitz was reluctant to fight Jeffries? Have you any primary sources to substantiate this?
BTW this thread was posted as a joke rebuttal to DR Zero's,I thought I had made that plain.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head was a political cartoon from the day, showing a bawling Fitzsimmons being hauled into the ring with a crane. (A little high-tech of the industrial revolution.)

It is possible that the cartoon was mocking Fitzsimmons for avoiding Corbett, not Jeffries.

But either way Fitz was roundly accused of sitting on the title and he became unpopular enough for the cartoonists to lampoon him.

Between Corbett and Jeffries, Fitz only fought once, a walk-over against a guy making his debut (Lew Joslin).

I think it is fair to say Fitzsimmons had to be pressured into defending his title. He sat on it for over two years without defending.
