They don’t need the extra energy to train whilst they’re injured so can eat less cals. But maybe this would slow injury recovery and/or would prohibit them being able to get in all the nutrients they need ?

Liam Smith looked pudgy last night against Eubank and used this excuse, I feel like at the top level you could have a nutritionist to help you pivot your diet and avoid that happening.
When fighters are injured, they often focus on maintaining enough calories for recovery, which can make it harder to stay on a strict diet. While a high-protein, calorie-deficit diet can help with weight loss, it might slow down recovery or prevent the body from getting the full range of nutrients it needs. Even with a nutritionist, it's a tough balance to maintain muscle, heal from injury, and make weight, which is why some fighters, like Liam Smith, struggle with looking "pudgy" or out of shape.

It seems like a calorie deficit would be the obvious solution when injured, but maybe it messes with recovery or something? I'm no expert, but I'd guess that getting enough nutrients to heal properly is more important than staying super lean while you're sidelined.
