No announcement yet.
That moment Crawford brought up Ricky Burns and Canelo legitimately didn't know who that was.

Bud got roasted there by a guy who barely spoke much English a few years ago.
He asked for 1 elite fighter
The simple answer should have been Spence (i know people will try claiming he wasn't elite but he still had the best resume in the division, was still rated top 5 in p4p lists or top 6 and held 3 belts and undefeated so still the best name on Bud resume)
He instead choose Postol and then Ricky Burns. Don't know wtf made him come out with those names first

I could be wrong on that, though. Also, I felt like Crawford maybe also did my mention him incase anyone said “damaged goods, weight drained”.
Crawford gave Spence such an epic ass whooping that it makes us question how much of Spence was left on that day. It was THAT bad.

As for Burns, he probably just mentioned that one because that was Crawford's step up fight. At the time Crawford faced him, that was Crawford's first world title winning opponent and his first title challenge. Burns was a former titlist at 130, he was the reigning WBO titlist at 135, and he would go onto win another belt at 140 after the Crawford loss. I don't think it was the same level of a win as Spence or Postol by any means, but it's probably one that sticks out in Crawford's mine because it was the fight that announced him at the world level.El_Mero likes this.

Him bringing up Ricky burns is hilarious. Coulda said postal or Gamboa. Or coulda brought up Mexicans like Beltran and to really hype up the fight Jose bumavidez and turn it to carnela ducking the brother.

And if you go by rankings, Burns was TBRB #3 at the time (behind Beltran, whom Crawford beat two fights later, and then-WBA titlist Richar Abril who didn't drop in the rankings off his loss to Rios because Rios blew weight) while Gamboa was TBRB #7.Last edited by famicommander; 06-25-2025, 10:59 PM.El_Mero likes this.

Burns was the reigning WBO lightweight world titlist, a former super featherweight world titlist, and he went onto win the WBA super lightweight world title after Crawford beat him. Gamboa just held an interim strap at 135; his actual world title reign was at 126 and, while he had a solid career after the Crawford loss, he pretty much lost all of his big fights afterwards.

Then you start getting into the guys like Gamboa, Horn, Brook, Khan, Indongo, Mean Machine, Diaz, Molina, Dulorme, and Avanesyan. Then another step down you have guys like Klimov, Prescott, Jean, Lundy, and Benavidez.
It's a pretty deep resume but it's definitely fair to say it's light on elite opposition. Just a ton of good wins.
