He didn't look so mean or accurate losing to Benn. He was wildly inaccurate. I love Manny and he was my favorite trainer in the ring and in the broadcasting booth. But McClellan had the piss beaten out of him and could not adapt. If he couldn't beat Benn I don't think he is beating many ATGs. We all know what a **** he was, but that is not the point of the thread. Personally, I am glad he was not an ATG, for I would hate for such a man to gain those priceless accolades.

As I wholeheartedly agree with your view on his nature, my view on the Benn fight has a little twist. I admit that I haven't seen it since back then, but I clearly recall Benn punching McClellan to the back of the head multiple times. We all know that it's not only a foul but also dangerous. So my take is that McClellan became disorientated and hurt by those rabbit punches and that affected his performance in a big way.

That's my take. I may be wrong particularly if Benn didn't connect with rabbit punches before late in the fight.

Sounds like a very British take there. No mention of McClellan beating the hell out of Benn as well and arguable knocking him out in the first round, and also knocking him down again late in the fight and being ahead on points untill the brain bleeding got too bad. Benn collapsed outside of the ring and his career was ruined after this fight.

I agree he was becoming inaccurate, looking for the big KO which caused him to miss many shots and tire himself out. He was not head hunting though, and perhaps if he had stuck with the left hooks to the body he would have finished the fight.

I always thought it was the hard headbutts, but you're right, there were plenty of rabbit punches hard enough to contribute or do the job themselves. May be time to watch that fight again. I always enjoy watching the puppy killer get stomped and stomped good..
