Galento formerly looked like a total bum in bad footage, but in this footage you can see - even though awkward and rough in style he's very dangerous and tricky. Both of these guys are hitting very hard its easy to see.

I want to say more about Galento.

I was expecting to find his run up to the title fight to be questionable. More promotion than substance. But I was quite wrong.

I expected to see one, or at best, see two fights with opponents with winning records, (by decision, not KO.)

So I was quite surprised to see that he was actually dominating fighters with winning records, with 11 straight wins, all by KO, with eight opponents having 30 plus wins each. No opponent had a losing record or under 20 fights.

Two Ton Tony seems a touch more than just one more 'bum of the month' fighter. Although I believe to most he's on that infamous list. **

After Louis, Galento stopped Lou Nova in 14 rounds as well, giving him 12 KOs in a 12-1-0 record, in a 1937 to 1939 run.

I wonder if they (Louis' guys) thought of Galento as just another 'bum.' He falls right into the time frame with all the other non-threats.

Or was he a contender?

** I am assuming that Louis' 'bum of the month' period was after Schmeling (II) late '38 up to WWII.

(Please correct me if you think that isn't the BOM period.).

P.S. With Billy Conn sneaking in, and turning out to be a surprise 'not-bum.' But I suspect they thought Billy was going to be easy too.

I did not know this, good info! and never rated Galento that high. In this video though, its the first time I have seen a degree of craft Galento has. He’s a dangerous and tricky fighter. It makes sense he dropped Louis.

Lots of guys dropped Louis. Galento was far from a skilled boxer, and his defense was very poor. He was fat and short with a short reach. Yet had he followed up his knock down with something serious he could have been champion. He could hit.

Once again this is just a basic opinion thrown at Galento since the footage is so bad. This is the first footage thats good enough to show the man was actually pretty sneaky and a dangerous fighter, though not a smart fighter

He is sneaky for Joe Louis, a fighter who had trouble switching tactics and thinking in the ring. Jack Blackburn did the thinking for Louis. My opinion on Galento is he was a short and fat heavyweight with a limited reach. He could hit hard though. When you look at his boxing ability, he is a little dirty, he doesn't set up his offense with jab, or throw textbook punches. No feinting nor is he deceptive with his hands. You are right, Galento isn't a smart fighter.
