Turn of the century round robin non-champs

    Slavin, Ruhlin, Root, Goddard

No Sharkey, Choynski, Childs, Maher, etc. because I wanted to give lesser subjects some limelight and even though those guys are non-champs they're hardly less often talked about.

To be clear the era is late 1890s or early 1900s, whatever date you prefer if you need an exact date.

    Open to suggestions.

As far as I know the only match up between these men are two contests between Ruhlin and Goddard. One of which is a newspaper victory for Ruhlin that is also disputed as a newspaper draw. The other is a DQ win for Ruhlin.

Maybe some fun and/or interesting dialog will come of this. If not, The Hawk tried, brother.

Slavin and Goddard were finished by 1895 at the top level, Choynski lasted a bit longer while Ruhlin was only hitting his stride, all were genuine contenders. Goddard whipped a green Choynski, drew with peak Jackson and went 2-1 with Maher, old age and alcohol caught up with him.Slavin flew the highest, around 1890 he was a decent claimant to the number one spot. Choynski fought just about everybody, 1890-1905 and was just a shade short of the very best. Ruhlin was never number one but drew with Jeffries and Maher(one of the best fights ever at heavyweight) beat Choynski and got the better of his series Sharkey. I would ignore the Goddard win but 1895-1902, Ruhlin is a clear number one of this lot. Overall, I'd go Goddard, Slavin, Ruhlin and Choynski. Peak Maher fought all four, beat Choynski, Slavin, drew with Rulin and went 1-2 with Goddard.

I think the footage from the era can be counted on one hand, but I am not the most knowledgeable cat here either.

Hard for me to judge guys there is no footage of, although I know a lot of people do.

Judge Roy Bean has it in a steamer trunk.
