Anyone had to go through a long rehabilitation post surgery?

My god it’s boring. Any recommendations on how to spend the time other than talking rubbish on here?

Thankfully I was only in hospital for 1 night. I had arthroscopic hip surgery to repair torn labrum and reshape the hip joint.

Recover is usually around 4-6 months but can be as long as year. I’m also having some of the common issues related to the surgery primary Iliopsoas tendonitis.

It’s pushing me to my limits I won’t lie.

I haven’t played chess since I was a kid, maybe I’ll buy a book and relearn how to play!

      Any regular book recommendations?

Main thing I remember about post op was the growing discomfort as the anaethesia wore off... grinding my teeth afte a few hours of that ish and the codeine they gave me barely touched it.

What's your genre? For leisure I usually go with Sci-Fi and /or Fantasy, in which case Iain Banks or Cory Doctorow is where I'm at now for SF and Joe Abercrombie or R.Scott Bakker for fantasy.

If you go on chess.com or similar just start playing, or play against the computer, best way to learn at this kinda level. Doesn't matter of you lose a load, just get the practice in. Studying matters if you're really planning to pursue it but you can go a long way just on practice and instinct.

Anyways, best of luck with it all, man, hope you find something that catches your interest. Had a lotta free time on my hands since COVID began myself, but been keeping busy running the Pick Em on here and researching all kindsa random crap for discussions in the lounge. Got a coupla community projects I'm working on IRL too, getting ready for when things get back to sorta normal.

Ha... I honestly don't do terribly well with boredom, tends to get me itching for a drink or summit..

Cheers dude. Drinking makes everything less boring, I too have had to resist the urge.

I only read non-fiction. Politics especially. Nothing too dry

Unashamed Chomsky fanboy here, erm.. Joe Stiglitz some if you're interested in the economic slant. political history I got a fascination with the ideological movements of the 20th C and the Soviet Union and **** Germany in particular. Recommend plenty there but it's more history than Politics I'd say, though there's always an overlap.

If you watch video talks, I'm liking Varoufakis at the moment, find plenty on Youtube, Hedges. Wolff. Plenty of the TED talks are worth a watch too. In case you're getting the impression I'm a little left leaning you'd probably be right, but I try to absorb as much as I can from other sources too... those are just the ones I come back to.

Thanks for the suggestions! I like Chomsky I’ve watched a bunch of interviews. I actually watched one with both him and Varoufakis.

I haven’t read any of his books though. I’ll check out Joe Stiglitz!

I love reading/watching anything **** Germany related. Might rewatch WW2 in colour.

Have you read anything by Norman Finklestein? Beyond Chutzpah is good read.

B.utler had pen1s enlargement surgery early this year, went from 1" to 3.5".

He had surgery in March and he's still recovering. He went to rehab and physical therapy, but it didn't help very much.

Might have got worse actually, send him your prayers please.

WWII in colour is a good one, and of course the classic World at War series. Chomsky's worth reading - probably the most clear thinking and accessible poltical author there is... Manufacturing Consent is a must though in some ways dated and then maybe Hegemony or Survival and Detering Democracy... got a few of em on my bookshelves depending what I lent out.

Finklestein I've had recommended before but not given him a look over yet, I'll give him a try.
