Reports of Navajo people being detained in immigration sweeps sparks concern from tribal leaders:

Navajo Nation leaders are upset over reports Native Americans have been questioned and detained during Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids.

The Navajo Nation is reporting at least 15 tribal members in Arizona have been wrongfully detained and questioned during the immigration sweeps.

“There’s just a lot of frustration being profiled or stereotyped that we are not from this country,” said Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley.

Officials say at least one of the members was involved in a raid in Phoenix.

That person showed their documentation during questions and was eventually released, officials say.

Justin Ahasteen, executive director of the Navajo Nation Washington Office, situation and that the person involved wasn’t an intended target.

He said his office hasn’t confirmed any reports of ICE going after Navajo citizens.

State Sen. Theresa Hatathlie, a ******** who represents District 6 covering all of the Navajo Nation, said she received a report from a Navajo woman’s family who said she was questioned by ICE and asked to show proof she was Native American during a raid in Scottsdale.

The woman and seven others were lined up behind white vans and questioned for two hours without cellphones, Hatahlie said.

She eventually was allowed to use her cellphone and texted her family, who sent her a photo of her Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB), and she was allowed to go, Hatahlie said.

“With a lot of the families that we talked to, we feel that, many of these cases that are coming through, the allegations that are coming through are, they feel that they have been racially discriminated and also profiled, especially at their places of work,” Curley said.

Navajo Nation officials have reportedly asked the Department of Homeland Security, Arizona and New Mexico governors and ICE to explain what’s going on and say people on the reservation are in fear.

Native American leaders are warning their people to be prepared and vigilant.

“Many of our Navajo people are spread throughout the country and the world. You know, now we’re trying to provide assistance and resources on how to get a lot of their tribal identifications verified with a lot of these en******,” Curley said.

It’s unclear if anyone was actually apprehended on tribal land.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said in a news release on Friday that his office received reports that Navajos have had “negative, and sometimes traumatizing, experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants in the Southwest.”
