I've been on the wrong end of a blow out game and still finished the game and heard the final bell/whistle. Imagine a unification boxing match where both boxers in the final round go 'eh, we fought 2 of 3 minutes good enough lets quit' and they shook hands and hugged, this site would riot. It's just weird to me, back in high school and college we always finished the game barring external circumstances such as weather but these teams who are getting paid millions of dollars can't finish the last 40 seconds?

Winners (or those who are on the brink of winning) will not take a chance of adding to the lead if they time it where the losing team won't touch the ball again. Imagine a turnover that gives the other team the break they need.....That HC would get fired soon after.

I get it, you're winning and you're down to the last few minutes of the game and you just play keep away until the final bell. We see this in boxing with winning fighters getting on their bikes in the final round and barely throw any punches and in soccer where the winning team just passes to itself, but they finish the game, they play the entire allotted time and really that's all I'm asking for. Vince Lombardi said "Winners never quit" but I guess sometimes they do.

Play/fight smarter, not harder. To place certain victory in peril over some credo defeats the purpose of winning. Seriously, could you imagine all you had to do was sit on the ball (or stick and move, if we are using boxing) and you would UNDOUBTEDLY WIN, only to lose while trying to win ''better'' ????

How do you explain that ?

If ''quitting'' ensures you win......it's the right thing to do. Winning is winning.

In other NFL news, the Lions just hung a banner into the rafters as a result of the Rams' Super Bowl win.

I guess we just disagree on this issue, when it comes to professional games, especially at the championship caliber, I expect the teams to play the entire game.

What is there to gain with your team having the ball and the lead and less than a minute to play ?

You notice how no other sport does this? No World Cup game ends early because one team is up. No US Open match ends early because one player is winning. No Olympic 100 meter race is stopped at the 90 meter line because someone's in first. Imagine if during Mayweather-Pacquaio Floyd said "Hey there's 40 seconds left on the clock, Manny's not going to win on points or by KO, lets just stop the fight" and everyone involved from Manny to the networks said 'Okay', this website would've lost its mind. I dunno, in all my years playing sports from elementary school to college I have never once thought 'Man we're winning with only a minute left, we should just call the game now'

If you follow NFL, this strategic move is common and logical and has been so since it's birth.
In boxing, when a fighter knows he is going to win, he usually does flashy, non threatening moves (pitty pat) the final moments.

I don't follow tennis or soccer.

I don't watch much of NBA but the winning team plays keep away with the ball

NCAA F will take out the starting team when a game is out of reach. This is an exception due to the fact these instances may be the only time 2nd stringers get into real game situations.

MLB, when a game is out of hand, the winning team will also switch out starters for bench players.

Winning is winning and there is no reason to jeopardize it by winning ''better''
