BUT there will come a point where he will plateau and he will need to do things more strenuous to get get his heart rate higher than merely power walking can do. Right now because he is overweight any type of physical activity raises his heart rate but as his heart (like any other muscle) gets stronger itll need more of a push. Personally I think swimming is the single best exercise. & I think a combo of swimming and jogging (outside) will get anyone into great physical and mental shape. One thing about swimming is no matter how far you can run or how fast, swimming will really put you in check into how strong your heart is and how deep your lungs are. A good swimmer will always have an easier time transitioning to running and not vice versa.
yeah thats why I power walk on an incline or walk up a hill, the incline is awesome for your thighs and legs you start feeling a burn, I dont really powerwalk on the street, you dont get much of a burn, but man using the stairmaster machine or powerwalking on an incline on a treadmill gets my heart pumping and is easy on my knees.

To me Swimming is hands down the best workout if you want a tough workout that won't hurt your joints, you develop the swimmer body they have great posture, and lats, and toned lean bodies from all the full body movement and burn tons of calories. plus it gets you in great heart health shape.

Have you thought of using an indoor bike? They're great if you can't jog out due to the weather.

Ive used them before and get bored plus it burns and it makes my ass sore, my thighs burn bad.

I love using the stairmaster and incline power walking.

I also hit the weights 3 times a week, mostly doing full body workouts, I stopped worrying about bodybuilding stuff, to me its useless rather focus on functional workouts.

Ya, I love the bike. No impact on the joints. I realize it's boring but the results are great. Listen to some music or read while doing it and the time flies. I have no clue why people run outside anymore if they're over 30.

Yeah I've also noticed I don't get delayed onset muscle soreness the day(s) after.

Do you put any resistance on the bike? First day i used an indoor bike and pedaled intervals for speed and then slowed down, my legs were burnt, i could barely walk the next day my thighs were on fire.

Yeah I alternate between higher and lower resistance levels, higher when I'm riding slower, and when I increase the intensity I reduce the resistance.

Bike riding always burns my legs out, you ever seen those indoor cyclist sprinters? They have huge legs compared to the outdoor long distance tour de france riders, those indoor cyclists got legs so huge it looks like the took steroids in each legs lol

This is the real, correct way to power walk:

Haha, you'd probably get a better workout doing the C walk.

                      Celtic walk that is.
