Incidentally, it's interesting to note that the champions he rates the highest are the ones that immediately led up to his reign: Walcott, Charles, and Marciano (the latter probably because he had met him and faced him in mock exhibitions, so he had respect for his ability).

Ali was a film freak. He watched alot of film on all the old time Heavyweight Champions, and all the way up to his era.He even watched alot of film on the lower weight fighters.

Muhammad Ali never let on to the media and press how much film he watched.

That makes is very hard to justify his comments about Dempsey then.

I haven't watched it in awhile, but I believe they were to the effect that he was nothing but a wild slugger (while watching the Willard fight, for which there was a reason after the first knockdown due to differences in the rules).

But later in the interview he said Jack Dempsey would be a much harder fight for him than Gene Tunney!

You have to be carefull when listening to Muhammad Ali talk.Sometimes he's kidding around in a serious tone of voice.Sometimes he's making jokes.Sometimes he's on his kick of saying I'M THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF ALL-TIMES theme. That's when he puts other fighters down. You have to follow Ali's career real close and watch all his interviews, and read everything he has said. Then you can tell which Muhammad Ali is talking.

I've heard him talk in awe about Joe Louis and many old time fighters.I heard him rank Jack Johnson 1st,Joe Louis 2nd,and himself 3rd. But in this interview he talks bad about Jack Johnson.

You have to put all his interviews together when talking about the great fighters of the past, and kinda' get a feel what he really believes. He said Mike Tyson would KO himself. Then 5 minutes later said "That's if he can catch me"

Muhammad Ali is a real complex person, and you need to see through when he is acting(Which is alot)and when he is really serious. He once said Marciano would beat him.Another time saying that the black fighters are superior to Marciano.Depends what kind of mood he is in.
