    Rate Chavez's defense.

    1-10, 10 being the best.

I made this thread because I was reading some posts in here and someone said that "he had a lackluster defense." I know that it wasn't a defense like Mayweather's, but it wasn't bad at all. He did not get hit as much as people think, especially for him being a brawler/puncher.

    What you guys think?

When I think about Chavez's defense.....I think about how thankful he should be he had a cast-iron chin.

When you're as skilled in other areas as Chavez was any weak link in your game will be criticized. In contrast to how great he was, his defense was lacking when compared to the rest of his ability.

He took a lot of punishment in his career.

7 - He was slippery, especially on the inside, but by no means unhittable. Poet's right - his granite chin definitely helped him out, but he wasn't a punching bag.

A granite chin and balls the size of apples are what he had in terms of defense.

His defense was his offense really.

Assuming a guy like Mayweather is the bar for a 10, Chavez gets a 5 or a 6. If Mayweather is well above the bar, then maybe you can give him a 7.

                Id give him an 7.5.

At the height of his career he was on the downside and he started to rely on his chin more than slipping punches but

in the mid to late 80 he was really good defensively especially when you consider he was being offensive as well. which gave his opponent more opportunities to hit him but they didnt that often because of his ability to slip and catch punches on the inside.

heres a piece hbo did on him talking about his defense and accuracy

7.5 is very good rating for defense in my opinion

sweet pea and james toney to me would be a 10

they both didnt have to move to make you miss but could make you miss while standing right in front of you

His defense is severely underrated because it wasn't a moving defense, it was of the "fight on a handkerchief" style. He would stay squared up to his opponent and offer slight movement, slipping and parrying shots.

                    i agree!

i am actually more impress by fighters that can be defensive without movement which is harder.
