When Ray Leonard defeated Ayub Kalue to win the WBA 154lb Title and then quickly abdicated so he could reatin his Welterweight Title, the WBA matched Rocky Fratto and Tadashi Mihara in November 1981 to fill the vacant title.

Mihara decisioned Fratto and was to defend in South Africa against Charlie Weir, but the new champion's homeland of Japan would not allow Mihara to fight there because of South Africa's apartheid policy.

So the WBA, anxious to please it's powerfull South African officials and grant Weit a title shot, searched for a fighter to face Mihara in Japan.

It's chose, Davey Moore, an unranked pro from the Bronx, New York, of eight fights who had never even fought a ten rounder. Moore then travelled to Japan in Febuary 1982 and knocked out Mihara in six rounds to win the crown.

Then Moore travelled to South Africa two months later and defeated Weir, who was nicknamed the ''Silver Assassin'' in five rounds.

Moore would make 3 defences of the WBA Title before losing it to Roberto Duran in 1983.

Very good explanation. I all this and I remember Weir. He was a good puncher. I didn't expect Moore to stop him. Heck I didn't expect Moore to stop any of those guys. Moore did have good amateur experiance but he exceeded my expectations. I was a sad day when he died in that unfortunite accident.

Probably, mainly due to politics, especially if he was unranked.
