    Best rope-a-doper in boxing history?

I mean making opponents miss purely.

Ali was popular but he was eating shots on the ropes and he was using ropes more like to decrease punches' impact. (Especially in the 70s when he was punching bag.)

My candidates are Mayweather, Canelo and Benitez. Fury is also incredible for his size.

    Discuss.

I am not sure if I would call it rope-a-dope but Quarry liked to lure his opponents in by laying on the ropes and using them for leverage as he countered.

His infamous snooze of a 'championship' fight (WBA version) with Ellis saw Quarry constantly trying to lure Ellis in and Ellis at times simply standing at ring center refusing to follow.

      - - Jimmy Young famously out roped and out doped the rope a doper Ali to thunderous cheers for Kid Jimmy and resounding BOOS for Ali who was now fully immersed in the LLS part of his career.

Hopkins did it well at times.

You are wise my friend. Very close fight. That was Quarry style.

LaMotta and Moore knew how to use the ropes to their advantage.

Young hit Ali with low blows in the 1st,2nd, 3rd,and7th rds.
I scored the fight 7-6 - 2 for Ali, I'm not giving a man the round for putting his body out through the ropes as Young did in the12th 13th and 15th rds to boos from the crowd.
Young was a nearly man ,he lost close decisions because ,imo he did not have the mentality of a champion. He had Ali there for the taking, overweight, undertrained, and aging, and he didnt have it in him to go for it,he didn't have it in him to take the title from the champion.
Ali was piss poor but Young couldn't find it in himself to wrench the title from his grasp.
A close fight that could have gone either way the score cards were rubbish, and Young has only himself to blame for not letting it all hang out and winning decisively imo.
To answer the original question Benitez.

                - - Ali sticking his torso over Angelo loosened ropes in Zaire OK not part of a fair boxing match. Jimmy going under the top rope ain't against regulation, but no matter, Ali knew he lost and Jimmy won as did the people.

Lmfao thread turned into Ali vs Young. I scored it for Young too in a close decision. Ali was just pathetic.

Dundee did not loosen the ropes in Zaire in fact he tightened them concerned that Ali could fall out of the ring and seriously injure himself.

Dundee ,with the aid of matchmaker Bobby Goodman ,Angelo cut lengths out of the ropes with a Gillette double edged razor and refitted the ropes,
this is all in Dundee's autobiography , " My View From The Corner ," page 182

The rope a dope was not planned, Ali improvised it when he found how efficiently Foreman cut the ring off.

There is no rule against leaning back on the ropes.
Deliberately sticking your head and upper torso out through the ropes is a foul, look it up.

The fight was close enough to have gone either way.Ali was not in shape, his fault but he did the best he could,Young did not,he underperformed in his biggest opportunity and that was his fault too.
