I think one of the reasons the US cannot be an elite team in the WC or Olympics is because most of our elite athletes choose 1 of the other 4 major sports to play. Sure there are some great US born soccer players, but when it comes to an entire team we just can't compete with other countries that soccer is their #1 sport.

I don't know any soccer fans and find it strange, I would play soccer in elementary school many years ago and the kids still play it today in school...generally when you introduce a sport to young kids they pick up on it and continue to play....Not here in the U.S. though as after elementary school soccer just disappears. we push baseball, football, wrestling, tennis and swimming thru out jr high and high school....soccer is the largest sport in the world and gets sidelined by us Americans for some reason.......3.5 billion fans and most Americans could not name a single team or player.....unless it's a dumb female crying in the media or an empty stadium that they don't make what the men make.....

A lot of kids play it in school these days, but once they hit high school its like they move away from that
